Scott Rocklage is a man known for his many talents and passions, both inside and outside of the laboratory. He is a well-known person in charitable circles around the greater Boston, Massachusetts area, and along with his wife, acclaimed psychologist Patty Rocklage, can be counted on to help drive any philanthropic causes that help to improve the lives of Bostonians and others in the region. But he is also known for his work with organizations that help those around the globe as well, specifically research companies and medical developers who are leading the drive toward new treatments, devices, techniques, and medicines that will help those afflicted with painful and life-threatening conditions.
Most recently Scott Rocklage and his healthcare venture capital firm 5AM Ventures participated in a resource building campaign for the benefit of Expansion Therapeutics, a research and development company that is leading the way in finding a treatment and eventually a cure for myotonic dystrophy type I, or DM1, which is the leading cause of the development of muscular dystrophy in adults. The campaign, which also included the following firms, Sanofi Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, Novartis Venture Fund, RA Capital Management, and Alexandria Venture Investments, was an overwhelming success with more than $55.5M in funding acquired. This will help expansion therapeutics work toward finding an effective treatment for DM1, which currently the medical community doesn’t have.
DM1 is an RNA condition that is hereditary and increases in its impact with each subsequent generation. This means that within a few generations after the initial discovery of the condition, and entire finally line can be ended by the debilitating effects of muscular dystrophy. With an effective treatment of DM1, the medical community can help bring peace and comfort to those affected and possibly find a way to slow or prevent the onset of muscular dystrophy altogether.
Scott Rocklage joined 5AM Ventures as a venture partner before moving up to being a managing partner a year later. He got his career started by earning his BA in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley before moving on to MIT where he worked toward his Ph.D. in Chemistry. He has over a hundred peer-reviewed papers in publication and holds dozens of patents either solely or with his partners. He is a model of a man who works hard to not only be a success, but to help make the world a better place for all.
